And here I am again. Any plantation homes in the area that you would recommend?

Nope. We really don’t have any. But several of the old mansions in the historic district offer tours. Wormsloe plantation is iconic, but the actual buildings are gone, for the most part.

Not many options, the historic district has some very nice homes to visit. Owens-Thomas house has a guided tour and includes slave quarters and an overview of what life was then. The only two plantations I know of are Wormsloe Plantation, doesn’t have the grand home but is about 900 acre and excellent to tour. The other is Rose Hill in Bluffton. As stated previously, don’t miss the Mighty 8th museum in Pooler.

Wormsloe is worth a visit for its beauty, but the house is just ruins. Rose Hill in Bluffton, SC is a newish development for well-to-do Yankees, and has no history as an actual working plantation. The original Rose Hill that was part of an actual working cotton plantation is actually in Union, SC (about 3.5 hours from Rose Hill in Bluffton), and part of the National Park Service.

Hofwyl-Broadfield just down I-95 a little over an hour or so near the mouth of the Altamaha River is now a State Park with an immaculately preserved house and educational programs. It was once a bustling rice plantation, and possibly the best preserved one on the Georgia coast.
