Hello - I am taking my wife and 2 kids to Savannah late March. Any recommendations on where to stay as we keep going back and forth between the Tybee area and the Historic district? Any guidance would be appreciated. We will have a car and plan to be relatively mobile but also want to spend a couple days just hanging out wherever we end up staying.

Not sure if the Historic district can occupy some pre-teens for more than a day.

Tybee's really primarily a beach. There are a handful of good restaurants, a lighthouse and Fort Pulaski just over the Lazaretto Creek bridge, which is definitely worth a visit to learn about the battle that happened there that essentially ended forts altogether. I haven't been yet, but there's a new Maritime museum that looks nice. But otherwise, and especially in variable temp late-March, you're probably going to be more entertained downtown in the Historic District. It's been warm lately, beach-warm in fact. But, I wouldn't count on that holding out through the whole month, as things swing around this time of year. If you were headed here in May, and looking for a beach holiday, that would probably be a fine time to consider Tybee more favorably.

Downtown does have some distractions for pre-teens... River Street and City Market with their shops. Ghost tours are fun (though I can't recommend one vs. another). Forsyth Park is a pleasant diversion with beauty and open space to wear the buggers down. Dining options are way more plentiful, too. You can always make a day trip out to Tybee and see the sights there, and if the weather's good, go for a beach afternoon.

You might like a dolphins tour. It’s about a 90 minute boar ride and lots of dolphins. My grandkids liked it when they were teens. Not sure when they open for the season.

Thank you for the responses and recommendations. It seems the hotels in downtown Savannah are kind of pricey at the moment (or maybe at all moments) - 250+/night starting and over $300 with parking and a pool (indoor or heated). We are thinking about staying on Hilton Head Island and driving in now because we can get a hotel for under $150. I will keep an eye on prices as we aren't leaving for a couple weeks and maybe there will be some deals on Expedia or something.

Of course, this is an option, Hilton Head is not very far, but the traffic on 278 is a bear.

You could consider any hotel near the Savannah Airport, which is in Pooler, near The Mighty Eighth Museum, which is awesome if your kids like military stuff, and only 13 miles, or so from the historic district. Pooler has a place called Fun Zone, which your kids might like..mini golf, go carts, etc. Also, movie theaters and a bowling alley.

Thanks a lot. Hate to keep bothering you but any restaurant recommendations in Savannah? Seems like there are a lot of really good restaurants - it is almost overwhelming. Definitely would like Southern cuisine but any unique places that represent the area well would be appreciated.

Take the kids for pizza at Huc a Poos, on Tybee, for sure. Also the Pirates House downtown. You can’t really go wrong downtown.
