Nightflight hit it right on the head. It's the paper mill. The Salt Marsh smell, while pungent, is not a particularly offensive scent and, as many on this thread have already agreed, it's a natural smell that usually reminds one of the open ocean.

The paper mill reminds me of decaying trash heaps in the Philippines. And there is no way to predict when or where it will strike, early in the morning, late in the afternoon, when it's hot or when it pours.

But, as fast as it rushes your senses it also quickly subsides. After five minutes you forget that it's there.

So don't mind that guy, he's the minority and we'll send him back to the rock he came from. haha
Talking about smell, when I lived in Australia, one of the slang for Americans, was 'seppos'. This refers to septic tanks. I guess during WWII, American servicement who were in Oz got a reputation for being stinky! LOL.

Smell is the ability to detect odors. Odors is what you smell.

That's right minibrings. Seppos = 'Septic Tank Yank(kee).' A bit of the old cockney English finds it's way across the pond.

Georgia nor Savannah smells any worse or better than most other states. I've been to quite a few states in my life and they all have their own unique smells. Once you are here for any length of time I would guest that it is like going to any other place; you get use to the "smells" and after a short time you no longer pay them any attention.

Is their a smell from the paper mill in Jesup? We're thinking of buying property there. It seems to be a very nice town and convenient to lovely Savannah.

I've driven through Jesup countless times and have yet to notice an odor.

A couple of Sunday's ago, I noticed a strong odor in the air that was enough to make me feel nauseated. Ughhhh I hate that paper mill odor.

Red face smell?? hmmm..

sounds like there's some sort of smell, but no1 is quite sure where to point the finger! Walking thru NYC on a VERY HOT DAY...yuck...the garbage warms up, the sewers do as well, & other things add to the "scent"...that leads to you wanting to RUN OUT of the city! There's unfortunately a lot of places around the USA, that aren't as clean as they could/should be, but then there's others that are truly nice! Guess, you've gotta go & see/decide for yourself??!! ;o)

To use a locally preferred phrase about the stink of industry: "it's the smell of money". I always hated it when people said that, but it explains a lot about Savannah.
It's also the smell of asthma and lung cancer. Lifelong Port Wentworth residents have a tendency to suffer from those two conditions. And there's a reason.
