A friend of mine swears Savannah has an odor in the air. I can only assume it's fishy as Savannah is a port city, but is it true? Is there a smell in the air in Savannah?
(Savannah photos show an absolutely gorgeous city, however, smell or no smell.)

Don't forget the paper mills. Not as bad as they used to be, but sometimes it does stink.

I figured it was the ocean that smelled, sorry. Maybe it is the paper mills my friend was referring to smelling. Sorry, I've never been there and didn't know that Savannah had paper mills.
The city is so gorgeous and the homes so Victorian that I love the looks. It would be such a pity to have smell in a city so beautiful.

Once in a while, when the air is heavy, you can smell the industrial odors from the westside of town. And at low tide in the hot summer, you can smell the salt marshes. Not everyone thinks that's a good odor. I disagree on that. I love to smell the marshes. It's NOT a fishy smell. Hard to describe, but it's part of being near the ocean.

I love the way the salt marsh smells, too.

To use a locally preferred phrase about the stink of industry: "it's the smell of money". I always hated it when people said that, but it explains a lot about Savannah.

Default smell of savannah

I notice the smell a ways out of town, used to be coming down 16 that wonderful road (hahahaha) from ATL. To me it's stong at first then after 10-15 minutes I don't even smell it. I think it became a part of the vibe I feel in Savannah. I did notice one trip that it was extremely strong and could smell in in the shower at the hotel, coming through the pipes. But all in all, it doesn't bother me.
