outside of natural resources, like elements and energy, i would guess advanced lifeforms have little use for us. as if we discovered animals in our yard, we'll most likely just ignore it. a few of us may want to observe it and see it develop to *serve us* as cows, pigs and chicken do in our managed farms. i would guess that multiple aliens may have found value in our servitude, and even warred over it. this is found in many religious traditions via concepts of good/evil, etc.
They probably weren't very inventive in gene modifying, which may be why so many different creatures taste like chicken

+1

They would have plenty of asteroids, etc., in their own neighborhoods to mine. No doubt if they are that advanced then they'd be highly mechanized and would have no need for frail humans slaves who would be about as useful to them as cavemen would be to us.

As for viruses and bacteria there isn't a need to look to the skies for that. Scientists are finding ancient pathogenic microbes in the permafrost, due to the thawing of the permafrost and also the oil and mining in the permafrost in areas that used to be off-limits. Some of those microbes may have plagued our ancient ancestors, and those ancient ancestors may have built up an immunity to them. But since the microbes have been locked, in a dormant state, in the ice for so long we may no longer be immune to them. It's possible that one or more of those microbes could create a major health havoc but it would probably be a long shot if that happened. I would worry more about the twisted sob's that are trying to created new and improved biological weapons than worrying about some ancient pathogen that may find it's way into the public.

1. Advanced species would easily wipe us out with a host of basic tactics like steering asteroids onto us, emps, bio-attacks while we pretty much couldn't do crap to them.

2. Somebody would have immunity or we'd develop something to counter the virus etc. and we would bounce back and recover even if we lost 99% or more of the population. There are scientific examples like this like the Rabbit plague in Australia that killed *almost* all of them.

All About Granite and its Geology

Granite is the signature rock of the continents. More than that, granite is the signature rock of the planet Earth itself. The other rocky planets—Mercury, Venus and Mars—are covered with basalt, as is the ocean floor on Earth. But only Earth has this beautiful and interesting rock type in abundance.
1) Granite likely occurs on the other terrestrial planets. And we know, from recovered meteorites, that is is abundant in asteroids.

2) Given that, were some beings coming to our solar system in search of granite, the prime source would be asteroids, from which it would be more conveniently harvested due to their low gravity.

3) Given the widespread availability of granite in our solar system, it is very likely that granite occurs naturally in most if not all systems that contain terrestrial-type planets, meaning there's no reason to think starfarers would need to come here for their countertop needs.

4) It's just granite. The costs in energy and time to ply the interstellar voids are not going to be paid by anyone or anything for granite (if hopping between stars is such child's-play for any civilization, it can undoubtedly synthesize all the granite it would like).

I've always thought that any visit would be a photo taking Rover type thing. Not a couple dudes flying around in a spaceship.

By the time we have the technology to visit other areas of the galaxy, why would we send humans when Hal 3000 can go and do it by himself.

But yet, they would probably take one look at us, and decide we were too primitive in form to really bother much with.
I'd like to think that too, but I'm afraid it's unlikely.

First of all, any alien species coming here from another planet is certainly the apex species on that planet. If their biology is anything like ours, that means they're a predator, because highly complex brains need a diet heavy in protein to evolve.

Another thing that it means is that they are almost certainly warlike creatures, or they would not have become the dominant species on their planet. And if they have survived long enough to develop interstellar travel, then it is almost certain that they are extremely good at war. And, if they are the dominant species on their planet, they clearly have no compunctions about slaughtering other living creatures if it advances their interests.

So. An extremely intelligent predator, with a long history of waging war and killing other creatures who threaten their interests, and quite probably has the technology with just one spaceship to make our entire species extinct without ever even landing on the planet. I would just as soon they not visit us.

And yes, I do agree that in our species, more educated and intelligent individuals tend to be more peaceful and less aggressive. However, the key word there is individuals - and unfortunately, those are usually not the type of individuals who rise to leadership positions in government or who are chosen to explore new territories. If (again) the biology of our theoretical aliens is anything like ours, these things are probably generally true of them as well. I could live without ever meeting them (no pun intended.)

Aliens realistically aren't coming here for our resources.

They can get water, granite and pretty much anything else from all over the galaxy....I mean heck just look at our solar system...there is a huge bounty of stuff all over the place.

The only reason they would be interested in earth vs. other options would be that it's more liveable and thus....we would have to go.

They would come here for the reason that we should colonize other worlds; so they don't have all of their chickens in one basket. It an asteroid hits Earth or our sun leaves out a mega-flare; we could all die and leave no legacy. We even know that another galaxy will collide with ours in the distant future. The only way we can have any future is to explore and colonize.

Of course that would not go good for us if aliens did manage to come here.

I think colonies on the Moon and Mars are a great idea. Also, maybe a giant orbital station that can house thousands of people. We should of course save millions of species cell samples and DNA, so that if the Earth is somehow destroyed or devastated by some great catastrophe, we can rebuilt.

You could even argue that the one thing that makes our intelligence worthwhile is the ability to save the Earth and restock it with life, after a mass extinction event.

Of course, we ourselves are likely to be the cause of the next mass extinction event -- a nuclear war, or a nano-technology disaster ("grey ooze"), or some other nasty thing that our diabolical minds think up to destroy each other with.

Seriously, an alien species that visited the Earth might say, "Looks like they're going to destroy themselves without our help. We'll just sit back and watch. LOL!"
