Newly-released bodycam footage shows a Seattle police officer audibly laughing and joking on a phone call the day after an incident where a fellow officer had hit and killed a pedestrian with their patrol car.

The officer on the call is identified as Seattle Police Officers’ Guild Vice President Daniel Auderer. In it, Auderer can be heard talking about the incident where 23-year-old exchange student Jaahnavi Kandula was hit by Officer Kevin Dave.

Shortly after saying “she’s dead,” Auderer laughs and says “it’s a regular person,” referring to Kandula. He then says “just write a check -- $11,000, she was 26 anyway, she had limited value.”

Yes, it's pretty callous. I suppose police work can make you that way.

It's horrible...devaluing a person like that. The "guild" should remove that person from leadership.

Humans use humor to cope with all sorts of tragedies in life, and death is only one of them. Police and other first responders deal with a lot of tragedy and humor is how they stay sane about it.

Google jokes about death and you'll get pages of it.

Y'all think this officer hurt the dead girl's feelings?

Eh, I'm just not worked up over some inappropriate comments made after the fact, that had no bearing whatsoever on the incident itself. Gallows humor is a real coping mechanism and without a doubt the Seattle police force is seriously understaffed and overtaxed by the nonstop drug overdose calls like this one that resulted in the death of a woman who failed to yield. There have been 6,000 emergency overdose responses so far this year alone.

Perhaps one thing we could all agree on is that drug overdoses should immediately stop being responded to as emergencies.

I think we've seen enough career damage done by those who have foot in mouth disease. Let him live down his stupid and senseless comments. I don't expect saints to do the work of police, so let's just keep an eye on his disease and see how he does when keeping his mouth shut..

You can't seriously dismiss these comments because this guy is overworked, right? If yes, there isn't a hot enough hell for both of you. This young woman was KILLED needlessly by SPD, and this guy suggests we pay off the family to the tune of $11,000 because that's all she was worth at age 26?

Both of these men should never be allowed near a police department again.

If this upsets you then you really need to stay away from military members.

Why are we even hearing about this? It seems just deliberately and pointlessly inflammatory. Two people talking on a phone, unrelated to the event, making conversation they would have no reason to think would be made public.

But that is the point of having body cams...right? And isn't it DIRECTLY related to the event?

I don't know...I see both sides to this. It DOES point to a callous disregard for a life taken by a fellow police officer...and in the state of Washington, he surely would've been trained about the legislation regarding access to body cam footage. He really should've known better.

Here's the legislation on Body cam footage, in the state of Washington

"A person directly involved in an incident recorded by the requested body worn camera recording, an attorney representing a person directly involved in an incident recorded by the requested body worn camera recording, a person or his or her attorney who requests a body worn camera recording relevant to a criminal case involving that person, or the executive director from either the Washington state commission on African-American affairs, Asian Pacific American affairs, or Hispanic affairs, has the right to obtain the body worn camera recording, subject to any exemption under this chapter or any applicable law. See http://app.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=42.56.240 for more info."

it'd be different if it was 2 officers in a bar, on their off- duty hours, having a drink or 2, and being overheard...but this guy was on the clock and wearing his body cam.
