The other part of hay prices being high is last year's drought in the midwest and TX. There isn't as much grass out there right now because of the drought but the livestock still need to eat so it is basic supply and demand. Even culling herds down to their lowest levels since the 1950's has only slowed the increases in hay prices again largely because the drought has hit supply hard.

We've seen food price increase due to unreported inflation as well. The government avoids publishing the true inflation rate and CPI in order to avoid raising SS payments. They use math and accounting gimmicks.

I'm not saying this it the only reason for the rise in prices, but it is a factor.
