My wife and I (ages 68 & 69) are thinking about driving from Louisiana to South Dakota and the Black Hills. We are thinking the end of April or the beginning of May. What is the weather like in those months? We would probably pass through Cheyenne, Wy. and up that way to Mt. Rushmore also. Your thoughts.
The weather can be 70 degrees one day and 30 and snow the next. It is a nice time to visit. The crowds are not there. Most of the seasonal businesses are getting ready and may not be open yet.
Many of those businesses don't open until Memorial Day weekend or the weekend before then. May isn't bad weather wise, but it can be pretty cool. Tourism doesn't get heavy until mid-June, so you've got time. I suggest you drive across Wyoming and visit Yellowstone while you're here, especially if you haven't been there yet. It's a pretty drive across the state in May-June.

So far we have had a dry spring. We had a mix of snow and rain last night, but that was the first moisture in a couple of months. I would expect that trend to continue so I would not be overly concerned about the weather. Grass fires could be a concern. Be sure to check the weather forecast from time to time. The Donkeys in Custer State Park also like carrots.

My biggest worry would be the weather in the middle Mississippi valley. This is the season for really big and destructive thunder storms. I would keep the Weather app on the smart phone.
The prediction of Midwest storms is getting better and better. The Storm Prediction Center will show which areas have a probability of severe weather.
The major attractions are open year round. Hill City will be good bet for small town shopping, things artful and crafty. Keystone will be a ghost town.
Custer State Park and Wind Cave national park are great places to visit.
Be sure to go see the donkeys! They LOVE animal crackers.
No offense, but if it isn't natural, don't feed it to them. Fruits and veggies, fine, but not processed foods full of sugar. Yes, they have been accustomed to handouts, but they aren't tame or someone's pets. Even the park staff will tell you that they would rather you feed carrots or apples, if you are going to feed them at all. At least those things won't make them sick.
