I've been researching on the internet, I can't find anything regarding these license plates in SD. The plates that start with a "W" and a series of letters/numbers (but not the regular length).

My initial thought was that these were "Whiskey Plates" (as a result of a DUI/DWI) but I was told these aren't a thing in SD. What are these "W" plates? Anyone?

They are organizational plates.

My husband has one for the Black Hills Symphony. I have also noticed them on certain veteran's group plates.

A lot of people buy them but don't add the decal for an organization. I'm guessing many don't like the new design of the general issue plate. I've had a few tell me that they don't want people knowing where in the state they're from. Can't say I really understand that last reason but whatever floats your boat I guess.

I can. I see certain numbers in the plates and give them a wider berth.
