Just wondering what kind of countryside is this area. Close to Nebraska sand hills?
Elevation ? and if flat or rolling hills?

Pine Ridge to Martin looks flat based on map data. I dunno if there are any minor bumps. Elevation in the 3500 ft range. Small lakes and bigger bumps not far off. The human geography is probably more important than the physical.

If the data is correct, it looks like Martin added 200 people in 2 years (20% increase after decades of small declines). 35% Native Americans.

Valentine NE to the east is a bigger market but not too big (short of 3000 in town). Continuing a slow population decline. 7% Native American, fwiw. Used to have an ALCO store but it closed. Probably still has 1-2 hardware stores.

Thank you very much NW Crow. I have never driven that road, just the one south of there in Nebraska. That is very interesting about the ghost town, I'll have to look that one up.
