In today’s Listín Diario newspaper (Santo Domingo; May 3, 2024) is an article about Dominican jockey Joel Rosario. He has been admitted into the Hall of Fame and he attributes it to winning once the Kentucky Derby and twice the Belmont Stake.

He first got into horse racing in the Dominican Republic. The government has been supporting horse racing at least since the 1940’s and maybe even before then. The first racecourse built by the government was Perla Antillana in Santo Domingo. In the 1990’s the area of this racecourse gaveway to the creation of the then largest medical complex ever created in the country, Plaza de la Salud. Rather than putting an end to government support of horse racing, it instead built a new racecourse on the outskirts of Greater Santo Domingo and named it Hipódromo V Centenario. Currently, this is the only racecourse not just in the Dominican Republic, but in the entire island.

Joel Rosario, who is from a humble background, began his interest in horse racing as a kid and because of the government support of horse racing managed to get involved in learning the sport. Many people train and encourage him until he was able to race in the Hipódromo V Centenario, quickly becoming the best jockey in the Dominican Republic.

In 2003 he was given authorization to be a jockey in the United States. As previously said, he has been able to win the Kentucky Derby and the Blemont Stake. Before he is 40 years old, alredy makes it to the Hall of Fame of Horse Racing in the United States, surprising even him since he says he is too young. lol

So far he has won over US$319 million in horse racing. Starting poor in tiny and developing the Dominican Republi. Got involved in horse racing precisely because the Dominican government made it possible and continue his horse racing career in the United States. Now has achieved what many jockies dream of: Hall of Fame. A photo of him and his name will be the newest one on the list in that link.
