Worldwide shipments of tablets are expected to plunge by 11.5% year-over-year in 2016 - the worst decline in the product category's six-year history, according to tech-industry tracker IDC. The industry is expected to ship 183.4 million units this year, with tablets running on Alphabet Inc.'s GOOGL, -0.58% Android and Apple Inc.'s AAPL, -0.96% iOS accounting for nearly 90% of all shipments.
Declining I agree with, but not dead. With 183 million units selling this year, it seems like there's still plenty to talk about.
My Samsung Galaxy Tab that is only 4 years old already won't run many of the newer apps. In particular my fantasy football app which is what I had been using it for most frequently (game on the tv, app opened on the tab). What a waste of money it feels like, it wasn't cheap and now it's a pretty paper weight. It still works for somethings but I definitely won't be buying another one. My phone can handle any android functions I need, just have to wear my reading glasses.
Tablets are dead, this forum can be removed or merged with the "computers" forum.

BTW: I use my tablet several times every day. Reading books (much preferred over dead-tree for several reasons), large-format remote control for my TV, larger displayed apps & games.
I expend a moderate effort to make sure it's contents are regularity backed up and if it died, I would drop everything to replace it.
-- actually, thanks! I appreciate you're posting this question as it prompted my response and thus reset what is probably a system counter of how many days since the last message, that the managers use to determine if a forum isn't being used enough and should be deleted.
He's actually right. And we discussed this before. This forum should have never been created.
"Cellphones & Smartphones" was just dumb to begin with. Why not just call it "Cellphones"?
Better yet, as I suggested when this forum was split up in the beginning: how about "Cellphones & Tablets". Maybe "Computers & Tablets"?

We have 1,900 employees, and are gradually replacing laptops with Surface tablets. I use one, with docking station and dual 22" monitors at my desk. The problem causing the sales decline is they don't need upgrading as often as the old desktops and laptops, and are more reliable with solid state storage, so they are kept longer.
When I first got my tablet I used it all the time. Now - well hardly at all. I don't find it to be a replacement for my laptop in any way. The only time I use it now is when I'm out of the house and think my phone screen is too small.
My wife uses hers all the time.
