At 1 p.m., Clinton will be endorsed by the 1.4-million-member American Federation of Teachers.

The endorsement comes after votes from the 41-member AFT executive council and feedback from members through its Web site.

“Our members have told us that they want a leader they can trust to strengthen public education, increase access to healthcare, promote commonsense economic priorities and secure America’s place in the world,” said AFT President Edward J. McElroy in a press release. “Hillary Clinton is that leader.”

***UPDATE*** NBC/NJ's Athena Jones adds the AFT chose to endorse Clinton after a seven-month process in which the union's executive council met with seven of the Democratic candidates and candidates participated in question and answer sessions with the council and with union members.

Doesn't it seem early for an official endorsement?

I am a teacher that is in a union and generally votes Libertarian. As far as I'm concerned neither Republican or Democratic politicians really give a dang about teachers much less other middle-income professionals. I have more respect for Republicans because they make no bones about this fact. Democrats, while sporting their 600 dollar haircuts and their 25,000 dollar suits make speeches in front of middle-income and other working class individuals that seem so supportive of us yet you know they don't really care. But then again if you were guaranteed a 100,000 dollar + a year pension for life would you?

Default Too early to make an endorsement - let alone one for Clinton

I agree with previous poster - Do they really know who they are endorsing???

This is why I am NOT part of a union. They never espouse the beliefs I had. If I was a member of AFT, I would cancel my membership.

Wow, I'm not a teacher, but as a parent/grandparent it upsets me that the Teachers Union would take a stand with ANY candidate.....I would think that by choosing a specific candidate they would open themselves up to all sorts of criticism from parents....I work for a non-profit agency and we are not even allowed to TALK politics in this building for fear of stepping on toes and losing funding!! Bold move to say the least...I would think that they would want to remain completely neutral.

I told my class last year that if Clinton was elected I was moving to Mexico. A boy came in the next day and said "I told my Dad what you said about Clinton." I'm thinking, uh oh, I knew I shouldn't have made that comment. But the boy said "My dad said he to leave room in the car for him!"

I keep telling myself that there is no way rational people can be fooled by her, but I guess there are 1.4 million irrational teachers out there!
