This is an interesting article about how tough it is in the education field for teachers and their safety. It’s impossible to deal with out of control children without it escalating anymore.
All I want is to make a difference and help others, however the current climate on campuses made me retire very early.
I had a chunk of flesh bitten out of my back and was almost speared in the gut with the pointed edge of a flag pole, all within 10 seconds. This particular student was a very big and very strong 11 year old boy who would go into a blind rage for long periods of time and needed to be restrained by multiple grown men. This was at a special needs school that had a lot of children with emotional disturbances. I have been in a lot of violent situations with children as a special education teacher, but this was the only time I was ever truly fearful for my safety.
We have a crisis team on our floor made up of male teachers who respond to situations when students need to be restrained. I do it on a weekly basis so it is normalized for me, but I can imagine the stress of having to deal with it as a gen-ed teacher with 30 other kids and not being allowed to put your hands on the student in crisis.
