I keep flashlights and a battery radio down there all the time. But on those occasions when I take myself downstairs for a tornado I make sure I have sturdy shoes on (no sandals!) and take my purse and cell phone. Mr. Dokie keeps a good sized chunk of cash in the house, he gets that and sticks it in his pocket.

What do others take to the basement (or shelter)?

If you have a loud airhorn that be a great idea too.. Possibly bottled water too.. Possibly a battery powered radio and a tv would be a good idea too

You are doing great though!

Water. A fully-charged phone. Heavy work boots. Bicycle helmet.

It used to be a weather radio. But, in truth, weather apps with good radar work so much better now at pinpointing where the storm is at any given moment.
