Many of us who live in southern California followed this case fairly closely from the time that the family first disappeared. I don't have time to watch a trial for all those hours, sorry; especially after the jury listened to all the evidence and found Merritt guilty.
Many of us who don't live in SoCal followed it closely from the very beginning and read and watched as much as possible about the case.
"Jurors recommended life in prison for Merritt with no parole for the murder of Joseph Mc Stay, but they delivered three death penalty recommendations for the murders of his wife and their two children."
"A hearing Friday, Jan. 17, for what was supposed to be the sentencing of Charles “Chase” Merritt for murdering a Fallbrook family of four in 2010, included many twists and even a request for retrial, before being continued to Tuesday."
Charles Merritt received the death sentence today, Jan 21, 2020.
On Friday 1/17, San Bernardino Superior Court Judge Michael Smith rejected a bid by Merritt’s attorney, Rajan Maline, for a new trial. The attorney cited, among other reasons, insufficient evidence to sustain the conviction.
Smith meticulously laid out his reasons for denying that request, explaining his take on what he saw at trial.
Among the evidence, the judge said Friday, were traces of Merritt’s DNA on the steering wheel of the family’s SUV — abandoned in San Ysidro — which he said offered “some evidence to suggest Mr. Merritt was the one who drove the vehicle there.”
And, Smith said, Merritt’s cellphone was in the area of the shallow graves a day or two after the family disappeared.
And he will serve a life sentence without possibility of parole on death row.........unless the new generation of bleeding hearts, those who come of age and don't know a thing about the case and the outcry, feel he has served his punishment and should be let loose because he is "not the same person he was"........POS
