For example, I lived in Orwell, VT, which is largely conservative. If you look at the voting tallies, you'll find plenty of conservative voting districts in Vermont.

Okay, I will clarify. In the 7 years that I have been here and worked in the public school system, and otherwise, I have found more outspoken people that have liberal or socialist views. I have found that "Vermont Conservative" is not necessarily Conservative Republican.

I lived there for 10 years, and still miss it pretty much every day. Yes, the winters can be long, but the summers are beautiful, and that first gorgeous sunny day somehow makes the dark long winter all worthwhile. I found the mountains to be not only great to look at, but in terms of hiking, to be accessible. I sometimes feel overwhelmed or intimidated in the Rockies - it's almost too much. But most of all, and this is not something that I can really explain to someone else in terms of what they might be looking fo in a placer, it is the only place I have ever lived where I felt completely accepted, and like I fit in. I am working on getting back there as soon as I can.

Delightful Dairy? Heck Yeah! Maybe I'll see you there this summer, or over at the B&W Snack Bar in Orleans. Actually, I've been to each of the places you have listed NEKW (many times!) and those are great recommendations. I truly enjoy the old fire towers on some of the local peaks too. Burke and Westmore Mtns. have great ones. They're abandoned for sure, but still quite safe to climb and what great views they offer. Also, Montgomery is a cool little town with seven (7) covered bridges. Then there are Willey's Store in Greensboro and Currier's Mkt. in Glover...

Gosh....and I was trying to keep politics outta this! Leeds, I don't know where you live in Vt but I think you can probably figure out where I was bred, born, and raised. I moved my family from Vt 21 yrs ago for many of the reasons you've mentioned and have never regretted it!

HOWEVER......if you think Vermont's or the whole country's problems are tax n' spend LIBERALS, I think you should spend some time in other places. If you look at when the sales tax was enacted in Vt......ummmm Republican sponsored.....Act 250....ummmm Darn Repubs again!

My feelings are "if you don't like it, try somewhere else".....you might find that every state has it's own unique set of problems and the grass isn't always greener....many problems don't stem from a 'Party Label", but from the fact we as citizens don't hold our elected officials accountable!

OK.I'm off the political rant......gonna look at snow pics bro sent from Newport!!

John McClaughry's the public face of The Ethan Allen Institute, and I can assure you - it's typically considered a conservative group, and it's ideas are very widely disseminated here, at least on radio stations that still contain some local content, and embrace thier mission to help build community and air a variety of views. John's voice is regularly heard on VT Public Radio, Radio Vermont and elsewhere and his views are quite influential.

Killington makes a fetish out of keeping enough snow to ski as late as possible. They are just starting Spring Skiing at Easter time.
Most VT areas close before the skiing's done, but Killington sees tremendous marketing possibilities in letting people ski as late as possible. Is there anything better than Spring skiing when it's good?
