Confirmed... It didn't reach NYC as thick as bad as this is today. This is definitely a rare event

"THE SMOKE DOES NOT SEEM TO BE MAKING IT THIS FAR SOUTH. STATIONS
NORTH OF US ARE REPORTING SOME. VIS SATELITE PIX SHOWS THAT THE SMOKE IS
DISSIPATING SOME AS IT MOVES THRU THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY"

Then this Special Weather Statement says

"THE SMOKE HAS LOWERED VISIBILITIES AROUND OUR REGION...ALTHOUGH NOT TO ANY HAZARDOUS LEVELS. THERE IS ALSO A SMELL OF SMOKE IN THE AIR WHICH MAY BECOME INCREASINGLY STRONG AS THE NIGHT WEARS ON."

When and Why

"When will we get rid of the smoke? Have to examine the upper air pattern. Upper low stuck over the Northeast is the main culprit, keeping winds in the north-to-south direction. This changes SUN-MON as a new upper low turns winds out of the south. But it could bring severe weather"

Toronto already got hit with a moderate dose this morning. In Oakville, the worst was around 9-9:30am imo. You could smell the smoke. My dog that doesn't like smoke (she avoids the kitchen when we're frying steak, which she'd otherwise be very intrigued about), didn't want to go out for her morning walk.

Here's how the sun looked at 10:30am in Oakville.

I drove up to Elora and the haze was quite bad along Trafalgar Rd in North Oakville/Milton, the Mississauga skyline and Niagara Escarpment were almost completely obscured by smoke/haze (distance of 10-13km).

We've had some light haze from Alberta fires a couple years ago, even this May, but today was the worst my family and I can remember in the GTA from having lived here 30 years. And tomorrow is supposed to be significantly worse (as bad or worse than what NYC got today?).

Up in Elora this afternoon, things weren't as bad. Just a light haze of the sort that we've seen before every now and then. This is a view from Elora looking towards the GTA around 6pm (you can see the brown haze seems thicker that way).

Well, so far this morning in Elora is not as bad as yesterday morning in Oakville. We'll see how that evolves. This is 7am.

Yesterday I got a phone call from a cousin in Charlotte, NC. She said that there was even her area an air quality alert due to these Canadian wildfires.

Meanwhile, this morning in NYC it is similar to yesterday morning, which is better than yesterday afternoon. But they are predicting that this afternoon will be just bad as yesterday afternoon. Masks are still be recommended for those who need to go outside.
