I can't see changing it from a national river to national park designation making a big difference in tourism. Generally the river is what attracts people to the area for rafting and kayaking.
It already seemed like a national park to me and there are a lot of great state parks nearby.
While it's essentially a name change with some shuffling on where hunting is permitted, I think it will bump up the number of visitors due to being included in more literature. How many books, TV shows, websites, ect. are dedicated to national rivers compared to national parks?
My one big qualm with this is that they're putting so much of the land in the preserve vs the park, including parts of Grandview and the Lower Gorge, which are some of the most visited areas of the gorge. Hunting should have been restricted to the upper gorge (Hinton to Glade Creek), which is less visited.
This is the first truly good news I've heard out of West By God Virginia in a very long time. Designating it as a national park will definitely but the New River Gorge on the map and bring about tourism both nationally and internationally. WV is home to some truly beautiful places and I've said before that the state should really hone in on tourism/ outdoors activities.
Perhaps this will encourage Amtrak to upgrade the Cardinal again. I took it many times to visit relatives in Huntington and it used to be a really comfortable ride, they had a real dining car and an observation car.

Big deal. Now it gets a federally financed toilet.

It already had a federally financed toilet.
The designation helps draw more attention to the area. It ultimately will bring in more people, boosting the local economy, and help to fight the negative stereotypes about WV. WV needs all the positive exposure it can get.
