Hi

We are thinking of moving from UES to suburbs and have shortlisted Scarsdale as one of the neighborhoods based on quality of elementary schools, commute time to midtown and the upscale nature of the area.

Within Scarsdale we were leaning towards Fox Meadows. It seems like all 5 elementary schools in Scarsdale are good but Fox Meadows and Edgewood schools have a bit more diversity (we are from India). So just wanted to get an opinion.

Also while high school is still long way to go, it seems Edgemont high school is rated higher than Scarsdale. But not sure how zoning works if we live in Fox Meadows.

in addition to fox meadow (fm) and edgewood, greenacres is relatively diverse also.

if you go to fm, you will be going to scarsdale HS, not edgemont.

in my son's 2nd grade class last year at fm, out of 17 kids, there are 5 100% chinese, 1 half asian, 2 persian, the rest white/jewish.

When you house shop in the suburbs you shop by school district. Mailing addresses mean nothing. For the area you are looking at, there is the Scarsdale School District and the Edgemomt School District. You can’t be in both. You will either be in one or the other. Your kids will attend the schools offered by the district you are in - unless you send them to private school.

Also, when a school district offers multiple schools at a certain grade levels, as is the case normally at the younger grades, the school district decides which kids attend which school. While most districts do so with internal mapping, they can change this at a moments notice anytime they want. So if you like a particular elementary school in a district than buy a house that is internally mapped for that school. But know that it is possible assignments may change.

I have reached out to Scarsdale school district registrar to see how they have mapped addresses to five elementary schools.

Ask them also how often in the past it has changed and whether there are any plans to change it in the future.

Some school districts tweak the maps regularly to ensure uniform enrollment numbers. Some districts never change it.

Did you ever receive a response on the mapping? If so, do you mind sharing as we are thinking of Scarsdale too and Fox Meadows for our son.

You are replying to a 5 year old thread, you know...

But you just want to know what school a house is zoned for? It's online, just type the address here and look at the "Neighborhood Code" https://townofscarsdale.prosgar.com/.../SearchFilters

I will say that Scarsdale inventory is incredibly tight right now -- it's hard to find a house at all, and even harder to find one in Fox Meadow specifically. If you limit your search to only that one neighborhood, you'll be looking for a long time. But all of the scarsdale schools are equally excellent, FM is not any better than the others. The only reason to prefer Fox Meadow is that parts of it are within walking distance to the train; but if that's your concern, then you should also look at the Greenacres and parts of Edgewood neighborhoods too. If you don't care about walking to the train, then there's no reason to prefer Fox Meadow -- any of the scarsdale schools are equally good.
