My former employer was full of this nonsense.

If you met somebody there who was an idiot, violent, useless, or sadistic, it was a safe bet that they were related to some current or past management big-wig. And every one of those bums is still employed there even after they've sent about 2,000 other people out the door over the past few years.

Skills don't matter in life - though they are a great way to *exclude* people from the hiring process. All that matters is who you know and who you blow. With the right connections, you don't even have to show up for work most of the time, and you'll still get paid and will be able to keep your job at the expense of hundreds of other people. I've seen this happen too many times already.

Related to or know anyone...yah. I agree. It's rare I've gotten a job because of someone I know. Now? It seems impossible to be hired on experience. I'm pretty screwed.

Get in good with a few people who are in the field you want to get into. What about Alumni from your school?

Let everyone you come into contact with know that you are looking for a job. And collect a ton of business cards and phone numbers. If your intution tells you it will be of benefit.

Of course everywhere is full of nepotism, or people who are favoured and protected, slippery self serving managers, etc. Anywhere a Human is in charge they will always look after people they like.

The people that annoy me most are people who will deny any kind if nepotism exists, despite getting shafted themselves.

The sooner everything is divided into tasks and uberised, with software managing people the better.
