16. J. F. Kennedy Park

Description: Kennedy Park is known for its well-stocked fishing lake (see Close-up this chapter). This popular south-side park also offers picnic sites with ramadas, soccer fields, multiple-use courts, Little League fields, a grassy volleyball area, a swimming pool, and lighted tennis and basketball courts, in addition to the outdoor fiesta area. Kennedy Park is easy to find. Take either Ajo Way west or Mission Road south. The park is at the southwest corner of the intersection of Ajo Way and Mission Road.

17. Lakeside Park

Description: Boaters and anglers will be pleased with the fishing and boating at this east-side favorite (see Close-up this chapter). Boating is restricted to small sailboats, rowboats, and canoes. But Lakeside Park has much more to offer than just water sports.All fields, with the exception of the Little League field, have lights. Picnic sites, with and without ramadas, can be found. Joggers can take a turn along a pleasant path around the lake, and kiddies can spend some time on the playground equipment.

18. Mccormick Park

Description: At first glance, McCormick Park (named for Ada McCormick) may appear to be one of the many tiny parks that dot the city, but on closer inspection you’ll notice a baseball field, an exercise course, a grassy volleyball area, a basketball court, a rec center, a playground, and a fair share of picnic ramadas with grills.Located in midtown, McCormick Park is near the Central-Lighthouse-City YMCA, which houses a pool. The park is located about a block and a half south of Fort Lowell Road on Columbus Avenue.

Description: One of the larger and most popular Parks and Recreation centers, Udall offers the latest in recreational facilities and a senior center. The rec center has workout rooms, racquetball courts, an indoor track, arts and crafts rooms, meeting rooms, and a heated pool. The center offers myriad programs and activities. Hundreds of leisure classes are held here throughout the year. The center is open daily.The park area is also top-shelf, with an outdoor amphitheater, lighted volleyball courts, a playground, off-leash dog parks, and fields for all kinds of organized sports. Take a jog on the well-maintained jogging path, or enjoy a picnic in one of the shady ramadas.

Description: This is the city’s main recreation center and will please athletes and nonathletes alike. Encompassing a gymnasium, a swimming pool, a tennis center, and performing arts and arts and crafts buildings, you can be assured there is always something going on here. Parking is plentiful.

21. Randolph Arts And Crafts Building

Description: A complete lapidary shop, ceramics room with kilns, children’s crafts room, and painting studio make the Arts and Crafts Building one of the most popular recreation sites in Tucson. The pottery shop and photo lab are located adjacent to the Arts and Crafts Building. A wide variety of classes include drawing, calligraphy, enameling, and jewelry.

22. Randolph Performing Arts Building

23. Randolph Recreation Center Community Building, Building #1

Description: Randolph Center’s central information desk, offices, and meeting rooms can be found in this building. Dance, arts and crafts, and pottery classes are just a few of the activities held in Randolph Gym. Gymnastics classes for infants through teens take place in a well-equipped gymnastics room, along with a slew of great leisure classes. Check the Tucson Parks and Recreation Program Guide and Class Catalog for more details. The building is open Mon through Fri from 6:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sat from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed holidays.

Description: The US Tennis Association (USTA) awarded the center a National Facility of the Year Award. This terrific center, the largest in the Southwest, offers 25 lighted tennis courts, a pro shop, 10 racquetball courts, and year-round instructional programs for all ages. Monthly open tournaments for all ages and levels, tennis leagues, and racquetball clinics round out the program.

Description: This lovely little band shell is one of the nicest touches in Reid Park—the site of Shakespeare in the Park, numerous music concerts, and other live performances. Seating is, for the most part, on the grass. Bench seating is available for 60 to 100 people. You’ll notice a molded-concrete sculpture on the band shell. The 6 figures represent all aspects of the arts, and the sculpture is appropriately named Celebrate the Arts. This was the first piece of public art commissioned under the city’s One Percent for Art program.

Description: Located in the northeast corner of Reid Park, the lovely Hi Corbett Field is a unique vintage ballpark built in the 1920s (see Close-up in the Spectator Sports chapter). Home to the Tucson Toros, the field seats 10,000 and has snack bar facilities.
