City: Mystic, CT
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (860) 536-6325
Address: 72 N. Stonington Rd.

Description: This B&B was once a banker’s mansion, now beautifully restored by owners Carol and Matt Nolan. The tall columns and a high cupola signal the sort of night you’ll have here. There are 5 guest rooms, 2 with whirlpools, all with fireplaces. The house is full of antiques, and outside there is a swimming pool, croquet, and even a tennis court. You can borrow bicycles to ride around town. Innkeepers Robert Bankel and Evan Nickles also have a downtown location, a 3-room suite in the 1853 Captain Spicer mansion 2 blocks from the Mystic River drawbridge. At both locations, you’ll enjoy custom details, unusual antique pieces, and good old-fashioned Connecticut hospitality.

2. Steamboat Inn

City: Mystic, CT
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (860) 536-8300
Address: 73 Steamboat Wharf

Description: Right on the Mystic River by the drawbridge, this collection of decorator-designed suites overlooking the water is a great place to stay in downtown Mystic. There’s docking for guests coming by boat (at $1.50 per foot), a full hot breakfast at their little coffee bar, and wood-burning fireplaces in 6 of the 11 rooms. The other 5 have kitchenettes and whirlpools. Every room is differently shaped and decorated, mostly because of the unusual building, which overhangs and follows the arc of the river. The inn is nonsmoking, and the fireplaces are in operation Oct through Apr. They serve a full breakfast from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Stay here and you’ll have yachts and sailboats gliding right by your window all day, perhaps 20 yards away.

Insider Pick:

Description: On the National Register of Historic Places, this resort overlooking the Sound and downtown Mystic is a former estate. There are 47 rooms, 5 suites, and 4 efficiencies. The fireplace and whirlpool rooms in the gatehouse are the best, although there are balcony rooms in the east wing that other people swear by. The 5 suites in the central Georgian Colonial mansion include one used by Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall on their honeymoon. Indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, boating, a fitness center, and the on-site restaurant, the Flood Tide, makes this more of a resort than an inn. Go for the duckling or rack of lamb. You can even get afternoon tea here. Come for the holiday season and see the Mystic Tree Lighting and Boat Parade and participate in the Community Carol Sing.
