Telephone: (203) 327-6022
Address: 69 Jefferson St.
Insider Pick:

Description: This has been called the best antiques center in the country, and when you walk into the huge, 22,000-square-foot store, it’s easy to see why. The choices are varied among the 85 or so booths, but all are quite solid because the owners, Mark Candido and Ronald Louis, handpick respected antiques dealers. American furniture and home goods seem to dominant the aisles, and you’ll find period lamps, benches, bars, tables, desks, chairs, and architectural elements to complete your dream house. You will also find jewelry and vintage couture scattered throughout. The inventory changes quite often here, so every trip to the Antique and Artisan Center is a brand-new experience.

2. Harbor View Center For Antiques

City: Stamford, CT
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (203) 325-8070
Address: 121 Jefferson St.

Description: With dozens of premier dealers from places as far away as England and Japan, Harbor View Center for Antiques carefully vets its merchandise for quality. The selection of fine art on any given day will remind you of the high-end auctions you’ve seen only in movies, and the period furnishings and decorative accessories (all the way back to the 18th century) are hard to beat. Wealthy New Yorkers take the train out of Manhattan to decorate their homes with items from Harbor View. Some dealers here also specialize in ceramics, silver, clocks, jewelry, and textiles. Both Harbor View and the nearby Antique and Artisan Center were established in 1999, and have made Stamford a destination for antiques collectors.

3. Peter Suchy Jewelers

City: Stamford, CT
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (203) 327-0024
Address: 1137 High Ridge Rd.

Description: Connecticut has hundreds of jewelry stores, but none feature the selection of estate and antique jewelry that Peter Suchy does. In business for 26 years in Stamford, Peter has established a reputation for ethics and customer service. The store features jewelry from 1700 to the present, in Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, retro, and other styles. It’s a little like walking into a museum going here, but be sure to check the prices and not just gawk. You can find very reasonable prices here (as well as very expensive, rare jewelry). Peter Suchy also offers appraisals, repairs, and design services. This is a special place; since it’s the only jewelry store in this guide, you can be sure of that.

4. United House Wrecking

City: Stamford, CT
Category: Shopping
Telephone: (203) 348-5371
Address: 535 Hope St.

Description: This unique store in northern Stamford has 40,000 square feet of showroom space, and they need it because they specialize in large elements like corbels, full vintage bars, mantels, and doors. But they also have mirrors, rugs, lamps, and wonderful reclaimed pine furniture for sale. Outside you’ll immediately see what has brought random people off of Hope Street and into the store for the last 50 years: the antique and reproduction statues, fountains, and urns. If you want a weathervane for your new house or a gazebo for your backyard, this is the place to come. And considering the prices for new gazebos built from scratch, you’ll probably get a better deal here. Stop off the Merritt Parkway and check this place out; you will probably never see an antiques store like this again.
