Description: Played on a course laid out by renowned course designer Tom Fazio, the Principal Charity Classic, which begins in either late May or early June, is Des Moines’s preeminent golf event, drawing top golfers and hordes of fans out to an elegant, English-style golf club in West Des Moines. Part of the PGA Champions Tour, the 3-day tournament has hosted notable names such as Fred Couples, Corey Pavin, and Tom Lehman, as well as celebrities playing in the separate Pro-Am event, like Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher. A record 75,000 fans turned out in 2010 to watch Nick Price take the win. The event raises money for local charities including Blank Children’s Hospital and United Way of Central Iowa. Tickets are around $15, with discounts available for multi-day purchases. Children age 15 and under get in free with a paying adult.
