Des Moines is the major medical center for central Iowa, with hospitals and other facilities clustered in and around downtown, including Lutheran Hospital, Methodist Hospital, and Blank Children’s Hospital, which are all operated by Iowa Health, as is Methodist West Hospital in West Des Moines. Mercy Health Network has also added a hospital in West Des Moines to complement its large downtown facility. Des Moines University has an on-campus clinic with specialties including ophthalmology, osteopathic medicine, and physical therapy in addition to general family medicine.

Description: Established in 1944, this is the only hospital in Iowa to focus solely on children, with spacious rooms to comfortably accommodate overnight stays by parents and family members. There are also play areas for siblings and other young visitors. The 85-bed hospital has undergone renovation and expansion and features a level-one pediatric trauma center and a level-three neonatal intensive care nursery, one of the first such facilities anywhere to offer private rooms that offer specialists to work more closely with newborns. There is also pediatric cancer diagnosis and treatment. The staff has more than 60 pediatric subspecialists.

Description: Established in 1914, this 224-bed hospital has one of Iowa’s largest private hospital-based mental health facilities, with advanced treatment of mental illness and emotional and behavioral problems. It also has a leading chemical dependency center that has been treating individuals for more than 25 years. Other services include orthopedics, child and adolescent psychiatry, women’s services, general and outpatient surgery, and cardiovascular care, as well as cardiac rehab, emergency care, maternity care, and other services.

Description: From its beginnings in a single building in 1901, Iowa Methodist has grown to become a leading teaching hospital and medical center for central Iowa. With 370 beds on a 42-acre downtown campus adjacent to Blank Children’s Hospital, it also has one of the state’s only level-one trauma centers, including an air ambulance program. The John Stoddard Cancer Center offers surgery, radiation, oncology, and ancillary services. Other areas of specialty include cardiology and vascular care (the hospital was second only to the Mayo Clinic in performing open-heart surgery, in 1956), as well as diagnosis and treatment of other heart problems. There is an extensive physical therapy center and a large maternity center, as well as orthopedic treatment and other services.

Description: Founded in 1893, this Catholic hospital is Des Moines’s oldest continually operating hospital. Description: Since opening in 2009 to serve the rapidly growing western suburbs of Des Moines, Methodist West has joined the other hospitals of Iowa West in providing care in areas including cardiovascular and pulmonary treatment, radiology, orthopedics, and emergency medicine. The 95-bed facility has round-the-clock neonatal staff who work in partnership with Blank Children’s Hospital, while a 12-bed maternity center allows mothers to stay in one room for their entire stay.
