Description: While the University Hospital dates back to the Reconstruction period, the first class of graduate students did not enroll in the School of Medicine until 1969. Over the years, the program has continued to grow in both number of students and quality of education. In 1995, the school researchers moved into the new Biomedical Research Institute, located on campus. This state-of-the-art facility has enhanced this school’s ability to produce some of the finest physicians in the nation. The School of Graduate Studies, authorized the same year as the School of Medicine, initially offered five M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in the departments of anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology and immunology, pharmacology and therapeutics, and physiology and biophysics. While these departments changed names over time, indicating their incorporation of new advances in science and technology, the dedication to quality education remains high. The School of Allied Health Professionals opened in 1977 and has continued to expand its mission offering Bachelors’, Master’s, and clinical Ph.D.s in several fields. All programs are fully accredited.
