Health Care - Shreveport, Louisiana

Health Care - Health Care And Wellness

Willis–Knighton Medical Center recently announced plans to build Louisiana’s first hospital-based proton beam therapy center. By the use of this highly sophisticated system, radiation can be fired directly at tumors while not disrupting or destroying surrounding tissue. You would think the good folks of Shreveport and Bossier would be elated at such news. The fact is, we are simply spoiled with the quality health care in the area. We are a regional health-care provider that holds its own against larger cities such as Dallas. Heart transplants? Not a problem. Need aggressive yet advanced treatment for cancer? We have you covered. Just look at our phone book’s Yellow Pages: almost 10 percent of all listings are dedicated to physicians and health-care providers. That’s not to imply we are a sickly lot; the figure simply indicates one of the major industries in the area and the success at providing services to folks from east Texas, southern Arkansas, and much of the state of Louisiana.

Of course, we have a history of being pioneers in health care. The first Shriner’s Hospital for Children was built here in 1922. We have one of the best teaching and research hospitals, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, in the nation. The 49,000-square-foot Regional Urology Physician Clinic and Surgery Centers of Shreveport and Bossier are considered two of the finest urological care facilities in the world and are nationally recognized leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. All of the Breast Centers throughout the Willis–Knighton Heath System use digital mammography, allowing for instant images for the radiologist and the earliest system of detection available to the patient. And CHRISTUS Schumpert Sutton Children’s Medical Center has become the model for comprehensive pediatric health care in the nation. See why we feel spoiled?
