Description: While also housing a medical school, this 435-bed facility, locally known as University Hospital, serves the health needs of all persons, regardless of the ability to pay. While designed to address short-term acute-care needs, University Hospital also has on-site an accredited Children’s Hospital, a regional Burn Center, and a Level One Trauma Center serving communities across northwest Louisiana, east Texas, and southwest Arkansas. This medical center is one of only six hospitals in the nation affiliated with the world-famous St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Also, the Feist–Weiller Cancer Center has an academic faculty with various board certifications that allow them to offer the best in comprehensive cancer care in the region. Cancer specialties include medical oncology, surgical oncology, radiation oncology, hematology, pediatric oncology, thoracic surgery, gynecologic oncology, otolaryngologic oncology, orthopedic oncology, and bone marrow transplantation. Operating as a translational research hospital, Feist–Weiller takes the problems that arise from treating certain cancers from the bedside to the research center, often returning to the bedside with advancements in treatment. The willingness of patients to volunteer to participant in clinical trials also allows this facility to remain on the cutting edge of treatment for all illnesses, including cancer. It is also home to the Center of Excellence for Arthritis and Rheumatology, which has garnered national recognition for both its research and success with patients.
