Description: Opening on September 16, 1922, to primarily treat children suffering from polio, this facility became the first Shriner’s Hospital for children in the United States. Since then, this hospital has expanded its services, focusing on bone, muscular, and joint disorders. Most children are seen on an outpatient basis, with over 11,000 served a year. Should a child be required to stay, however, this state-of-the-art complex and extremely qualified staff make that stay as pleasant and as nonthreatening as possible. Should an extended stay become necessary, on-site tutors ensure that children remain up-to-date in their coursework and assignments. Physical and occupational therapists make rehabilitation fun and the individualized care always includes a big role for the parents.
