Description: Joining the Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) in the 1998–99 season, it did not take long for this team to show its colors: the Western Division champions, Governor’s Cup champions, and President’s Cup champions. And when the WPHL merged with the Central Hockey League in 2001, the accolades just kept coming. The season runs from Oct to Mar, but die-hard fans (and they are plentiful) wish it could be a year-round sport. While many of the teams’ members come from Canada, they have taken to the great Southern hospitality that makes this area great. But do not think all our kindness has made these guys soft. The action on the ice can become quite heated and usually does. Of course, the Mudbug Ice Girls do their fair share of keeping the fans focused and rowdy. And the mascots—Clawed, and his younger nephew, Lil’ Bugger—help keep the spirit alive. Along with the team members, they often appear throughout the area promoting a sport foreign to many Deep South folks and performing community service. Individual tickets are quite reasonable, regardless of zone. Team-related merchandise can be purchased online at the Swamp Shack. So get decked out and come yell, Geaux Bugs!
