Description: Built in 1752, the Atwood House is one of the oldest houses in Chatham. Since 1926, the house has been the home of the Chatham Historical Society. The museum’s eight rooms, containing many historic collections and furnishings, include the Joseph C. Lincoln Room, which is a repository of the prolific Cape author’s books and memorabilia. The museum also holds murals by 20th-century artist Alice Stallknecht, an antique Fresnel lens from Chatham Light, antiques, Sandwich glass, and an international collection of seashells and artifacts. It is open from early June to the mid-Oct, Tues through Sat from 1 to 4 p.m. (except in July and Aug, when hours are extended to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.).


2. Chatham Railroad Museum

Description: On the appropriately named Depot Street is Chatham’s Railroad Museum. It was built in 1887 and operated as a train depot until 1937, servicing more than 20,000 passengers per year. It was donated to the town in the 1950s and is today a museum offering a wide variety of railroad-related items that are sure to delight railroad buffs. The building, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, offers displays of antique equipment and memorabilia as well as a caboose dating from 1910. It is open Tues through Sat, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., mid-June through mid-Sept. There is no admission fee, though donations are accepted.

3. Creative Arts Center

Description: Budding da Vincis and Cassatts will love the year-round classes in drawing, painting, pottery, photography, sculpture, and jewelry making. Classes are flexible and open to a wide range of ages and skill levels. Price varies per program.

4. Outermost Harbor Marine

Description: This is the place to go for seal cruises and shuttles to South Beach and Monomoy from late June through mid-Sept. The shuttle to South Beach, which runs on demand from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, costs $20 per adult and $10 per child (under 12) for a round trip. The shuttle to North Monomoy costs $20.
