Description: One of the last remaining saltwater farms in southern Maine, Laudholm Farm was saved by local residents years ago, and it now serves as the centerpiece for this 2,250-acre research sanctuary. Seven miles of trails wander through a wide diversity of ecosystems—from forest to sea dunes to beach to meadow to marsh, and they’re open for the public to use every day from 7 a.m. to sunset. Birdwatchers especially love the place, which is habitat to an array of seabirds. Trail maps can be picked up at the entry kiosk or at the visitor center, which is located in the old farm and has exhibits and informational displays. They’ll show you where to find the scenic overlooks and how to get to the beach. The informative visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the off-season and on weekends also from May through October.
