Parks & Recreation - Wells, Maine

1. Crescent Surf Beach

City: Wells, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: The tides put the squeeze on these sands, eliminating most of the beach when the water is high. The facilities are fairly limited—no lifeguards, no picnic areas, no ice-cream stands—so if you want to make a day of it, you should bring your own lunch and be prepared to watch the kids. Portapotties are it as far as relief is concerned. Everyone enjoys the tide pools here, which can be rife with life and can entertain for hours, and the bird-watching is good as well, because of more National Wildlife Refuge marshes. Parking is available at the Gold Ribbon Drive lot, accessible from Webhannet Drive.

3. Wells Beach

City: Wells, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: Besides simply being one of the finer stretches of sand and surf on the coast—4,000 feet of fun and sun—Wells Beach offers some interesting bird-watching, thanks to the Webhannet Marsh, where there are often waders, shorebirds, and migrating waterfowl of all sorts. But it also has many of the hallmarks of resort beaches, those conveniences and superficial delights that seem to grow up wherever there is a natural wonder—an arcade, playground, take-out stands, and restrooms. Lifeguards patrol all summer long. Parking is limited, so you might consider paying to put your car in a lot.

4. World Within Sea Kayaking

City: Wells, ME
Category: Parks & Recreation
