Description: This hidden, 300-acre gem in south Overland Park is most definitely growing, with new ecosystems, 13 gardens, four conservatories, and a handsome learning center. Five miles of wood chip–covered hiking trails meander through the area and across two 75-foot bridges spanning Wolf Creek. The trails become slightly more challenging along limestone bluffs rising above the southern banks of the creek. Views from here are marvelous, and if you linger long enough you might see a crane or other waterfowl silently land. Eight natural ecosystems, from prairie grassland and dense woods to a wildflower meadow, provide a surprise at every turn. The highlight is the Erickson Water Garden, with four waterfalls and a bog with more than 100 natural plantings that attract birds, butterflies (more than 500 varieties have been identified here!), and two-footed nature lovers. Benches scattered around the area invite you to rest and listen to the relaxing sounds of cascading water and laughing children. The Marder Woodland Garden has massive stone pillars supporting wooden arbors at its entrance and overlook. It’s a romantic spot with the sound of falling water resonating through towering trees. And your little nature boy or girl will have fun following a spiraling walkway or watching frogs frolic in a pond in the Children’s Discovery Garden. Plants and trees are identified here, as they are throughout the garden. An easy, half-mile asphalt trail provides a nice stroll. The visitor center hosts programs and social events and contains a small gift shop and concession stand. Enjoy your refreshment on the sunny patio.
