Description: If you have a penchant for the old, the unique, or the collectible, then snoop to your heart’s content in this quaint historic district that features over 20 antiques shops and galleries, all within charming row houses. Despite the number of shops in one place, they rarely repeat each other, so it’s a sure bet you’ll be here for hours. The prices bring back buyers again and again. One not to miss is Christopher Filley (816-561-1124), where unique antiques and decorative arts are stacked to the rafters. Although it specializes in garden art including architectural remnants, statues, bird fountains, and pitted stone balls, you’ll also spy hand-carved santos, a nice selection of mercury glass, mirrors set inside enormous industrial gears, and other delightfully quirky finds. Prices are not marked, but don’t be afraid to ask Christopher or his associate, Rich Hoffman. You’ll get a price and perhaps a fascinating story about the item’s history. The Knotty Rug company (913-677-1877), where owner Darrel Wingo’s motto is “the knottier the better,” is where to find that perfect Oriental or French needlepoint, all displayed in lovely settings. European Express (816-753-0443) may sound like a fast-food cafe, but it’s actually three floors filled with antiques, including enormous armoires and marble washstands. And make sure to stop by Rick Bumgardner’s Morning Glory Antiques (816-531-5554), and . . . oh, what the heck. Visit them all; each is totally different, all are wonderful. And the proprietors are truly happy to greet you and answer questions.
