Description: Charlotte Latin School, founded in 1970, is a coeducational day school with more than 1,300 students in transitional kindergarten through grade 12. Located on 122 wooded acres, Charlotte Latin is one of the city’s finest in terms of academic quality and diversity. The school is divided into the Lower School (transitional kindergarten through grade 5), Middle School (grades 6 through 8), and Upper School (grades 9 through 12). Latin’s curriculum is college preparatory, with 17 Advanced Placement programs. Latin students routinely score more than 200 points above the national average on the SAT, and 100 percent four-year college placement is the norm.Charlotte Latin encourages individual development and civility in its students by inspiring them to learn, encouraging them to serve others, and offering them many growth-promoting opportunities. Latin was the first school in the country with a senior class who funded and built a Habitat for Humanity home; in the past 12 years, students have completed four Habitat houses. In addition to its well-rounded academic and community service program, more than 65 Charlotte Latin School teams annually compete in 17 different sports. Around 90 percent of Latin students play at least one sport. The school also offers extensive programs in fine arts, leadership, and international studies. Its facilities rival those of a small college, with 14 major buildings, 10 science labs, 13 computer labs, an engineering room, 5 art studios, 5 music studios, a 740-seat auditorium, a 17,630-square-foot media center, a 13,275-square-foot dining room, 3 gyms, a fitness center, 6 tennis courts, a 22-lane pool, and a 1,400-seat stadium.Charlotte Latin has been named an Exemplary School by the U.S. Department of Education. On three occasions it has also received the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award for leadership, school environment, parent and community support, and documented success.
