Health Care - Charlotte, North Carolina

Health Care

Charlotte’s hospitals offer the latest in medical techniques as well as some of the most qualified specialists. With health-care costs slightly below the national average, medical services are another financial positive of life in the Charlotte area.

Medical facilities are expanding at a rapid rate throughout the city and region, so wherever you live in the area, you probably won’t have to drive far to find the services you need. The city is nationally and internationally known as a center for cardiac care and research. Hospitals in two systems, the Carolinas HealthCare System and Presbyterian Healthcare, regularly perform open-heart surgery, as well as other highly specialized medical services. Both hospitals are also known for their cancer centers.

Most Charlotteans find the medical care they need in their own backyard; those who need more specialized procedures are generally less than 45 minutes away. Over the past decade, hospitals have expanded with surgery centers, medical complexes, and new general hospital facilities in the growing suburbs in south and north Mecklenburg County. Carolinas HealthCare System is now the largest employer in Charlotte with 31,000 employees, while Presbyterian Healthcare is fifth largest with 13,323.

Meanwhile, regional hospitals in surrounding counties are also adding more beds, treatment areas, and advanced equipment to meet the rising demand.
