Description: CMC–University opened in 1985 to serve the rapidly growing region of northeast Mecklenburg County and northwest Cabarrus County. The 130 private rooms are configured in the “snowflake” design, with every patient just a few feet from a nurses’ station yet isolated from much of the traffic in the traditional corridor arrangement.The hospital offers a wide range of health-care services, and its sleep services program was the first in the Charlotte area to be fully accredited by the American Sleep Disorders Association.A major expansion of the Maternity Center, emergency department, and outpatient services has bolstered the hospital’s offerings. The Maternity Center works with more than 2,000 families each year, providing personalized support and education throughout the pregnancy, delivery, and recovery. There are special perinatal and neonatal services for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries, and the Level III Neonatal Nursery is prepared for newborns needing extra care.There is also an intensive coronary care unit, a telemetry unit for patients requiring closer supervision, and a surgery department with operating rooms and space dedicated to cystoscopy and urological procedures. The emergency department, Charlotte’s second-busiest, averages nearly 70,000 patient visits per year. It is staffed 24 hours a day and is equipped to handle minor and life-threatening emergencies. CMC–University features a fixed MRI and a cardiac catheterization facility. It also offers diagnostic radiology and mammography services along with a respiratory diagnostic center and full-service laboratory for inpatients and outpatients.Adjoining the hospital is University Medical Park, a growing home for physician groups and satellite offices.
