Description: Davidson College is one of the smallest NCAA Division I institutions in the nation with 1,700 students, but it fields 21 varsity teams. Around 25 percent of students at the school participate in varsity sports. Davidson, located a half hour north of Charlotte, is known for producing teams that are fiercely competitive and draw much game-day support. The Davidson football team is a Division III member of the Pioneer Football League. Nearly all other Wildcats teams are NCAA Division I and compete in the Southern Conference. Davidson has consistently provided competitive basketball teams and men’s and women’s tennis teams. The 2008 men’s basketball team became the darling of the NCAA tournament with a magical run to the Elite Eight, and narrowly losing to Kansas in a bid to make the Final Four. That team was led by Stephen Curry, son of former Charlotte Hornet Dell Curry and now a member of the Golden State Warriors. Davidson’s rich basketball legacy dates to the 1960s, when Lefty Dreisell was coach and the team was ranked in the Top 20 nationally.Men’s sports include football, basketball, baseball, soccer, cross-country, golf, swimming, diving, track and field, tennis, and wrestling. Women’s sports are field hockey, basketball, cross-country, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, diving, tennis, track and field, and volleyball.
