Description: Year after year, students cheer their Golden Bulls to victory in six men’s sports and seven women’s sports. Johnson C. Smith University, a NCAA Division II school, is a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) and a historically black university located in west Charlotte, just across I-77 from Uptown.The basketball program at Smith dates to 1929 and has produced such notable stars and longtime Harlem Globetrotters star Curly Neal. The Golden Bulls often play to capacity crowds at cozy Brayboy Gymnasium, the team’s on-campus facility. The court at Brayboy is named for longtime men’s coach Stephen Joyner. The Golden Bulls also have the luxury of playing their CIAA tournament games in their home city, as Time Warner Cable Arena hosts this annual hoops showcase.Johnson C. Smith fields the city’s only collegiate football team, which plays at the modern, $4.5-million Irwin Belk Complex. This 4,500-seat venue is situated such that is provides great views of the Uptown skyline. The large bronze bull statue overlooking the stadium is one of the nicest pieces of public art in the Queen City.If you go to a home football game, be sure to catch JCSU’s entertaining marching band.
