Description: Rosedale, the 1815 private home of Archibald Frew, was part of a 911-acre plantation. It showcases classic Federal architecture with early-1800s faux finishes made to look like exotic woods such as rosewood and mahogany. Outlandish in its day, the home was dubbed “Frew’s Folly” by conservative locals, although it is now considered one of North Carolina’s finest examples of architecture from the Federal period. You’ll see Frew’s taste in carved Adams mantels, elaborate cornices, detailed moldings, a classic porch, dormers, and French wallpaper. Opened to the public in late 1993, the restored home is largely unfurnished to showcase the decorative elements. You can also tour the restored boxwood garden where you’ll see seven “treasure trees,” some thought to have been planted by Archibald Frew and three of which are considered to be the largest known of their species in this area. Guided tours are at 1:30 and 3 p.m. Thurs through Sun. Admission is $5 adults, $4 seniors and students. Children under 3 and members of Historic Rosedale are admitted free. Group rates are $4 per person (15 or more).
