Description: Located in Uptown’s cultural district, this social-history museum depicts the post–Civil War Southern history of Charlotte told from the perspective of the people who lived it. An 8,000-square-foot permanent exhibit, Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers, is the centerpiece, using more than 1,000 artifacts, images, video clips, and oral histories to show the economic transformation of Charlotte from a region of small farms after the Civil War to America’s main textile factory region in the 1920s to one of the country’s largest banking centers today. Quilts, civil rights photography, Carolina pottery, Victorian architecture, Charlotte neighborhoods, Southern music traditions, and political cartoons have been temporary exhibits. Lectures, panel discussions, book signings, workshops, walking tours, and youth activities are regular programs.Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tues through Sat, noon to 5 p.m. Sun. Admission is $6 adults, $5 seniors and children ages 6 to 18, $4 per person for groups, free for children under 6, and $17 for families. Free two-hour parking at the adjacent Seventh Street Station parking deck.
