Education - Reno, Nevada

Education - Education And Child Care

We take education seriously here in the Reno/Tahoe area, from our children in preschools to our graduate students at universities. Both California and Nevada are committed to providing each resident the opportunity to obtain a quality education, whether that student is starting kindergarten or entering a doctoral program.

Both Nevada and California have mandated high-school exit examinations, which all seniors must pass to obtain a high-school diploma. And, at the K through 8 levels, standardized tests are used by both states to evaluate student performance.

While schools in both states strive for excellence, each must cope with annual influxes of new students. Though the number of new students varies from year to year, all increases strain the already overcrowded hallways of school facilities. To help alleviate this problem, Nevada voters periodically pass bond issues to construct new schools.

As the number of students in the Reno/Tahoe area continues to grow, private educational facilities as well as charter schools become educational options for an increasing number of students. Private schools in the area serve kindergarteners, elementary, middle, and high-school students. A complete list of private schools in the state of Nevada is available through the state’s education Web site, listed below.

Some families prefer to homeschool their children, which is permissible as long as the curriculum is approved by the local school district.

Students moving on to the local university continue to receive wonderful educational opportunities because the University of Nevada, Reno, is ranked as one of the top 100 colleges and universities in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.

This chapter begins with an overview of the public and private schools throughout the Reno/Tahoe area. Then I discuss the topic of child-care options in the area and give you a range of places to begin your search for those services that best suit you.
