Getting Here, Getting Around - Reno, Nevada

Getting Here, Getting Around

The Reno/Tahoe area is easy to get to and easy to get around. Because the tourist industry is responsible for about 30 percent of the area’s income, a great deal of effort is put into making transportation accessible. So there’s a variety of plane, bus, and train services to get you here, and plenty of ground transportation to whisk you around. If you use any commercial mode of transportation to get here, I definitely recommend renting a car or an SUV once you arrive. You’ll need to be mobile so you can visit the many fascinating sights waiting for you around the area.

Lake Tahoe sits about 45 minutes to an hour away from Reno/Sparks. It’s more convenient to visit the lake if you have your own car; that way, you can stop to smell the pine trees at your leisure. If you don’t like to drive, especially during the snowy winter months, don’t worry—there’s commercial ground transportation to get you around. One important factor to keep in mind, however, is the fact that fluctuating fuel costs have made rates for transportation volatile in recent months. Keep in mind that the rates quoted here may have changed by the time you read this book. Also, many commercial transportation services are adding fuel surcharges that can range upwards of 10 percent on top of the total cost.
