Description: Learn about the history of Black Hills gold mining, explore an 1800s underground mine, and try panning streamside for your own specks of gleaming treasure. Guided tours begin with a 10-minute film, and each hard-hatted visitor is rewarded with a sample of gold ore at the end of the 68-foot tunnel. If your best panning efforts fail to yield anything, you can purchase a small vial of pure, 24-carat gold leaf in the gift shop, which also carries souvenirs, books, rocks, and that great pretender, fool’s gold. The mine is open May through Sept. Hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the rest of the season. For an additional small fee, you can go gold panning, too.

5. Rushmore Aerial Tramway

Description: Trams depart about every five minutes for a short ride to an observation deck where you can look out over a scenic valley to Mount Rushmore, about a mile and a half away. Trails lead to other overlooks, and you can pack a picnic and stay as long as you like before returning to the gift shop to browse for souvenirs. The tramway runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. or later, weather permitting, from late May through mid- to late-Sept.
