Description: Classical music lovers, this one’s for you: The Foundation for Modern Music features contemporary music written in the classical tradition by living American composers such as Yoko Ono, Johnson Reagon, and Jerome Kitzke. Sometimes the featured composers even attend the performances, which are held at locations such as the Rothko Chapel and Stages Repertory Theatre. The River Oaks–based foundation also holds an annual competition for teenage composers. Ticket prices vary based on the event and venue.

Description: For more than 50 years, Houston Friends of Chamber Music has teamed up with Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music to bring outstanding chamber music to Houston. Each year the Houston Friends of Chamber Music board of directors sifts through more than 100 applications from international performing groups to assemble a lineup featuring works by a mix of 18th-, 19th-, and 20th-century composers. There are nine shows a year, all held at Stude Concert Hall on the Rice University campus September through April. Individual tickets cost $60 to $85 for adults, $30 to $60 for seniors 65 and older, and $15 to $25 for students with an ID. All concerts begin at 8 p.m.
