Description: The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (formerly “Patrick Henry International”) is only 17 miles from the heart of Williamsburg. Depending on your departure point, this can be a quick, cheap entry point to the area. Service is provided by AirTran (800) 248-8726; U.S. Airways (800) 428-4322; and Delta (800-221-1212). Frontier Airlines (800) 432-1359, is scheduled to start nonstop service to and from Denver, four days a week, beginning in May 2010. The downside of Newport News: Other than AirTran, most of the flights into the airport are commuter planes. There are around 50 flights daily, including frequent direct service to Atlanta, Charlotte, and Philadelphia, and once- or twice-daily direct service to Boston, New York-LaGuardia and Orlando. (All other service is via connections.) A $23 million terminal expansion is scheduled to be completed in 2010. Once you’re on the ground, you can catch a taxi (the fare will run about $40). Several companies offer shared shuttle services for around $35 per person one way. Both options are located outside the terminal (advance reservations are recommended for the shuttles; more information is under “ground transportation” on the airport’s Web site). It’s about a 25-minute ride to Williamsburg.Car rental companies at the airport are Avis (800) 331-1212; Budget (800) 527-0700; Enterprise (800) 261-7331; Hertz (800) 654-3131; and National (800) 227-7368.
