Description: This is a Newport News-operated house museum. The T-frame Georgian house, built in 1769, served as a Confederate hospital during the 1862 campaign. It has been restored to its appearance during the Peninsula Campaign.

Description: This is the only large antebellum plantation house on the lower Virginia Peninsula. The Lee family fled the home three years after it was built when war came to the Peninsula. It became a Confederate headquarters until they were driven out of the area by Gen. George McClellan’s forces. The family returned after the war, and the city of Newport News bought the home in 1996. Restored, it now documents the Peninsula Campaign of 1862. Closed on Tues all year and on Wed in the winter. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for 7- to 18-year-olds.

Description: This is the home of J. Thomas Newsome, a prosperous and respected attorney, journalist, churchman, and civic leader who was part of the postwar South’s new black middle class. The Queen Anne home was the hub of the black community and the 1899 home is devoted to black cultural and historic themes. Open Mon through Sat, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A $2 donation is suggested.

Description: This facility combines the elements of a native wildlife park, science museum, aquarium, botanical preserve, and planetarium, with exhibits and more than 245 different species that reflect all of the state’s various regions. There are interactive discovery centers and galleries that take you back in time, through a limestone cave, under the sea, and in a mountain cove and cypress swamp. The museum is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mon through Sat and noon to 5 p.m. on Sun. Admission is $15, $12 for 3- to 12-year-olds ($4 more to visit the planetarium).

Description: On the Peninsula, a group of volunteers gathered and built their own imagination-fueled playground for kids called Fun Fort. It’s located in Huntington Park, which has a wonderful view of the James River and the nearby James River Bridge. There’s even a lifeguard-manned beach here with shallow water to let the kids cool off after a hard day of running through the multi-story wooden fort with its haunted castle, maze, slides, and swings. There’s a concession stand and the Crab Shack restaurant is right next door.

Description: Let the kids challenge their putting skills on 54 holes of miniature golf at three different courses, or you can head right inside to the arcade with more than 40 video or prize games. The snack bar has pizza and hand-dipped ice cream.

Description: Step inside a video game where you explore an ancient Inca stone temple ruin and make your way through a jungle maze while you hunt and are hunted by other players. You wear a laser-sensitive vest and carry your own phaser. Afterwards, you get a full report on how well you did, who you hit, and how many times they hit you. It’s modern warfare minus the medics. Open Tues to Thurs 5 to 10 p.m., Fri 3 p.m. to 12 a.m., and Sun noon to 8 p.m.

Description: The Peninsula Fine Arts Center, an affiliate of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting art appreciation. There’s a Hands On For Kids gallery designed for children and families to interact in a fun, educational environment that encourages participation with art materials and concepts. The Studio Art School offers three sessions of classes and workshops for children (ages four and up) and adults in a variety of media. Open Tues through Sat, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sun 1 to 5 p.m. Closed major holidays.
