31. James River Outdoor Coalition (Jroc)

City: Richmond, VA
Category: Parks & Recreation

Description: This group is serious about improving the James River Park System and its many amenities, so serious that they often build the improvements themselves. Take the 14th Street boat takeout, for instance, or the changing rooms at several park sites. Where a need is identified, this group isn’t afraid to get its hands dirty making the park and river a better place to be. They also hold an annual boat and gear swap and sale during the city’s Earth Day celebration in Manchester. Membership costs as little as $20 a year.

The group’s activities include conservation, habitat restoration, planting with birds and butterflies in mind, and working with local schools so kids get the connection between how we treat our world and what lives in it.
